Cats less friendly to males with beards? (face rubbing/bumping) READ TEXT, please?
Cats do the head-bumping/butting with other cats as a social gesture, as a cue for "I like you, grooming welcome". They certainly don't mind lots of fur!
And they head-bump/face rub with people as "I like you, pet me" or to mark you as THEIR property, laying down scent traces from the cheek pads. (Do they think we're furless strange cats, or what?)
But our cats (including ones that have owned us in the past) are uniformly unwilling to bump/rub cheeks with my fully-bearded husband. They'll happily lick and groom the shiny spots on his scalp, and purr and cuddle----but they just WON'T make "face to face" touch contact with him.
On the other hand, I can't get them OUT of mine (sneezing on all the fur!)---Scarlett will nuzzle for 15 minutes or more, given a chance.
Anyone else have experience with cats being less affectionate with males with face hair, & have an explanation why it's so?
Cats are as individual as humans are. I guess in the same way that some ladies prefer clean shaven men, so do some cats. Perhaps they're not keen on the texture of facial hair.
