7 card stud question?
I'm pretty aware of what strong starting hands are in Hold Em and Omaha, but what about 7 card stud? I'm sure trips, high pairs and straight flush draws are good, but what about low straight and flush draws (like 567 or 258 of hearts)? What about small pairs? Does it matter if they're wired or not?
And no crap from you, ZCT; they still spread stud games in some casinos.
well, the hands you are really asking about here are playable most times, but it depends on the dead cards, a major factor in stud starting hands which you overlooked in your description...if you have the 2-5-8 of hearts to start but there are three hearts out, then it really isn't worth much of anything, because you don't have much to back up your flush possibility...likewise with a hand like 5-6-7, if there are three 8s and two 4s out then you won't want to get involved with this hand
also, all small or medium pairs in stud are slightly more playable if they are buried, because to make trips with a split pair you will have to have a pair showing, and won't get paid off as much as you would if you had a buried pair and made hidden trips...also, make sure to check dead cards again here, if you have a small or medium pair you will want to make sure you are drawing live...for example, if you have 4-4-J and there's a 4 and two jacks out, then the hand becomes less playable

How do you handle those bad beats?
To give you a better picture, I'm only 14 and can play 15 different types of poker, gin rummy, cribbage and more.
I mainly play Texas Hold'Em no limit, but I don't like to be average and play alot of Pot Limit Omaha and also quite a bit of Stud, Seven and five card.
I don't really reckon I have much trouble in many aspects of the game; I can read tells and betting patterns decently, I can calculate my odds and pot odds finely, and I feel I make good bets.
But I just can't take bad beats too well. Certianly not to the wrong people (if you play poker you should know; there's always one at a table!)
So what do you guys do? Obviously I know ways like playing with your chips which I do a bit but what I want to know is what works for you, if you even get angry at all.
Thanks!
Develop a very good understanding of the mathematics of the game. If you truly understand the math, you'll realize not only that bad beats are normal, they are proof of your superior play. This will help some.
However, when this is not sufficient, learn how you react to the bad beats. [Understand yourself.] When you are in a situation when the bad beat is beyond your ability to deal with rationally, take a break. I usually go for a walk. Get up and get a drink. Just don't play for a little bit until you have yourself under control.
In the end it's a matter of self discipline. "Zen and the Art of Poker," by Larry Phillips helped me. Good luck!
