Police Scanner help?
So bought a new hand-held scanner. We can not all occupied. What are the normal areas of the reception? We live only about 5 Miles from our local EMS and police department, but never heard anything. We have the frequency online and have it programmed into the scanner. Should we buy a better antenna? Thanks
Your local public safety radio system must not be removed to the local station if they have found a very high tower at the station as well. More than a 20-30ft antenna tower rising from the ground and above the normal scrub. Make sure you have the correct frequency. If only the supplied "rubber" antenna then you should be used anywhere from 10-30 miles of range, depending on the frequency and nature of the system, it simplex, repeater or trunking radio. WX hit the search button and see if You get the local weather service radio broadcast. If thats in the same group as the local public safety its probably not the radio, but that the incorrect Frequency. Contribution of the city / country / territory, so we can check. An outside antenna on high-quality components, antenna, coax and a good 10-20ft pole dramatically increase the roof area, but can not be required if you use the field or trunked radio repeater system.
