Sheet Fed
While the Federal Reserve is expected that the target rate for federal funds at a record high of 0.5% on average, the federal government policy, the Federal Open Market Committee Meeting Tomorrow (Tuesday), the European Central Bank (ECB) has indicated a reluctance to leave the federal funds rate at least 2.0%.
As the euro-region went into recession in October, the ECB cut its key rate by 175 basis points to 2.5%. However, bank officials, led by ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet, are ringing calls for greater fiscal discipline.
Investors are betting the ECB will be forced to shave another 50 basis points of reference prices in January, but the Member of Governing Council Axel Weber warned last week that the bank wants to avoid "that" beneath that level.
"We must approach our care price where we have not explored before, "Weber told Bloomberg News." Our level as down to this was 2.0%. "
ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet told the Financial Times today (Monday) that he had "a certain degree of excessive pessimism," when the burst of the Internet bubble led central banks cut borrowing costs in question. Many analysts believe that interest rates extremely low fed speculative bubbles of the last decade, including the mass execution of real estate prices, their subsequent collapse to be a catalyst of the current global crisis.
Trichet said policymakers must "eliminate as completely as possible all the elements included in the world of global finance, building ramps and busts. "
Board member Juergen ECB Stark 10th December, stated that any room for further reductions in the sentence "very limited, so that perhaps only in small steps."
Of course there are analysts who believe that the recent statements of the ECB is just that
"They will be obliged 1.0% or go under in June, "chief economist Juergen Michels, euro-region of Citigroup Inc. (C) in London, said Bloomberg. "Rhetoric is now to justify their predictions are too optimistic."
The forecasts of the ECB to reduce the largest economy in Europe 0.5% in 2009, before expanding by about 1.0% in 2010.
If the estimate is too generous ECB, the European Central Bank could again had to reverse their political mandates. The ECB has actually raised its key rate at 4.25% giving in July, with politicians, their concern was that "wages and pricing behavior increases inflation pressures. "
The bank has not changed until four months later in October by a reduction its rate by half point on October 8.
"The ECB should refrain from examining all relaxing break in the cycle back, not to remain behind the curve, "said Marco Valli, economist at UniCredit SpA in Milan, told Bloomberg.
