Spades Rummy

Spades Rummy
New Card Games?

I love playing cards and learning new games, I currently play Bridge, Spades, Hearts, Rummy, All Fours. I am looking for some new non-gambling type games. I can play poker blackjack and all that jazz so thats not what I'm looking for. nybody know any fun games with a standard 52 card deck?

Well, many of the best games in Europe are played with a reduced pack of 32, 36, or 40 cards. Skat and Schafkopf are excellent games from Germany (the later is often played with a German suited pack of Hearts, Acorns, Leaves, and Bells).

I would also suggest that you look at some point-trick games. Unlike Bridge or Spades, different cards carry different point values, so it is not the number of tricks that matters but the card points in them. This twist adds a terrific dimension to play. Some good ones to try are Manille (which has many variants), Tressette, and Terziglio.

If you want to try something very different and enjoy the point-trick games, then I would also suggest tarot. Not many English speakers realize that these cards were created for playing games, games which are still played throughout Europe. Most countries use a French suited pack that you wouldn't recognize as being tarot but the old Italian trumps and suits are still used in Italy, Sicily, and Switzerland. These games range in complexity from the fairly simple (Scarto) through to the very sophisticated that could give Bridge a run for its money (Ottocento, Hungarian Tarokk, Point-Tarock, Royal Tarock).

For games in general, I suggest looking at:

For the tarot games, there's my own site:

One book I would suggest is The Penguin Book of Card Games by David Parlett - due for a new edition this August.

Five Card game ideas for a small group of friends, Entertain your friends with Party Games

Party Games World

Learning how to play card games like spades and hearts are a great way to have fun when you only have a few people over instead of a big party. You still need to entertain your friends, so try inviting them over for a few games of cards. It’s fun, there’s competition and laughter, and best of all, you’re getting to catch up on how their doing. There’s also different card games for any number of players, so pick a new game and try it out with friends, you might be surprised how much fun you have!

Another idea would be to invite a certain amount of people over and have a tournament in the card game of your choice. Texas Hold’em is very popular but if you don’t like that you could make teams of two and play a spades or hearts tournament. Start a Rummy tournament or even a one on one cribbage tournament. Playing any game with a slight twist in the rules can be very exciting. Try playing one on one solitaire where each person plays their own game and the first one to win gets a point. Play to 5 points. Or when you’re playing a card game with multiple hands, have the winner of two hands in a row make a rule (can’t use first names, no swearing, must hold the cards with the opposite hand etc.). If someone breaks a rule they lose a small amount of points. Make sure the rule is fun and goofy to create more laughter within the group.

That’s just a few ideas to get your friends over and have some good cheap fun. Make sure to switch houses so that one person doesn’t always get stuck being the host. Also try to play new games each week to keep the excitement. It’s not as fun when everyone is down and dirty serious about the card game they’re playing. The main idea is to keep the excitement!

What is the logic of setting the hierarchy of Cards as spade, heart, diamond, clubs in this order?

In any Card game points or hierarchy of cards is set as Spade, Heart, Diamond, Clubs like in Bridge, Rummy etc. What is the logic or historical background?

I was taught it has something to with the class structure of the Middle Ages.

The modern deck of cards is basically a tarot deck with the "major arcana" (Death, The Tower, The Fool etc) removed.

The suits of the Tarot are Swords, Staves, Cups and Coins.

Swords represent the nobility, Staves represent the peasants, Cups represent the Clergy, and Coins are the merchants.
