Telescope meteor viewing!?
Ok Ill try not to sound like an excited kid with a new toy but I got my new 10" telescope yesterday, my first ever Ive owned, and within 10 minutes while using a 17mm I watched a meteor travel from right to left of my eyepiece. It wasnt a fast zip like you see with the naked eye, probably about 2 seconds right across my view which of course feels quite long when watching it! My question is did i get lucky seeing a meteor in this way or is this something ill see more often. It was very exciting and would love to watch more. Thanks
Ok guys thanks for the answers. It seems it was most likely a satellite. Excuse my excitement, i've got a lot to learn! But even so, I bought the scope to amaze myself and Ive succeeded in my first 10 mins using it. So im happy with that!

Dear Sir:
A 10 Inch scope with 17 mm eyepiece will produce a very narrow window onto the sky and it is not possible for a meteor to have stayed within that window for an elapsed time of two seconds. Meteors shoot across the entire sky (a full 180 degrees) in less than one second. Many burn up before ever making it through the full arc.
Most likely you were observing reflected light from a low orbit satellite of some kind or another. They move much slower across the skyline and seem to fit what you observed much better than a meteor.
Please remember that meteors do not become visable until their altitude above the Earth gets fairly small and they begin developing friction with the air molecules in space that are close to the Earth. Meteors in deep space are just chunks of ice or ice and dust with no light being given off at all. Some are chunks of more dense matter such as rock or various mixes of metals.
If you wish to repeat the observation again some time, I would suggest you try in the hour (or so) before Sunrise, or the hour (or so) after Sunset. That way you should get a good contrast between the brilliantly lit satellite and the surrounding skyline. With a bit of preplanning you should be able to catch the ISS in your scope for a few moments. Information on ISS orbits is available on NASA's Web Site,
